Stem Cells from Dental Procedures

Stem cells are cells found in the human body that can help repair injury, fight disease, and maintain health. The National Institutes of Health and the United States Department of Health and Human Services believe stem cells can revolutionize the way in which injury repair and treatment of disease can be performed. Stem cells are currently used to treat leukemia and heart failure, and are even used for growing and transplanting organs utilizing the patient’s own stem cells. Today, stem cell-based treatments are being designed to fight Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, spinal cord injuries, and many other debilitating and life-threatening conditions.

Although there has been some controversy over embryonic stem cell research, stem cells in the StemSave program are non-embryonic, “adult” stem cells, which are not part of the moral and ethical debates involving embryonic stem cells. Plus, stem cells can now be taken from teeth (recovered from routine teeth extractions), ultimately making the stem cell harvesting procedure both convenient and affordable.

The National Institutes of Health has been able to isolate a powerful class of stem cells in the pulp of teeth. These particular stem cells are very valuable in that they are able to differentiate into a variety of tissue types, including muscle, cartilage, liver, and bone. By taking stem cells from dental procedures – such as teeth extraction for orthodontic treatment or other purposes – patients can have their own stem cells stored for use in the future in case they may need life-saving treatment for a number of conditions.

Here at Dr. Fulbright’s dentistry practice, patients who would like to secure their stem cells can register at StemSave’s website. StemSave will send a patented transport kit to Dr. Fulbright before your dental procedure, and once any teeth have been extracted, they will be placed into the kit. StemSave’s laboratories will then process the teeth and test the stem cells for viability. If the stem cells are positively viable, they are cryopreserved for use in future regenerative therapies should they be needed for the patient.
