What Is Gum Disease?

What is Gum Disease?

Periodontal disease, commonly referred to as gum disease, affects millions of Americans. In fact, most people will experience some form of gum disease in their lifetimes, even if they have excellent oral hygiene habits. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of bacteria and plaque in the soft tissues of the gums. Early stages of the disease may show no symptoms; however, swelling and redness along the gums, as well as bleeding, are some of the warning signs. If left untreated, gum disease can get much worse, causing teeth to become loose and even completely fall out. Without treatment, gum disease can also significantly increase the risk of serious overall health problems. Routine oral exams can identify gum disease in its early stages, and treatment for the condition can dramatically improve the condition of the gums.

The Gum Disease Treatment Process

Gum disease treatment typically begins with a procedure called scaling and root planing. Tartar and bacteria that have formed below the gumline will be removed, and the roots of the teeth will be smoothed so that the gums can heal and effectively reattach themselves to the teeth. The gums will then be further disinfected with a very quick laser treatment. The laser will be used to seal the gum pockets and sterilize them. The added benefits of utilizing laser dentistry for gum treatment include:

Perio Protect®

Perio Protect® can be an excellent option for patients who have gum disease. As an addition to your daily brushing and flossing habits, this non-invasive, at-home treatment is designed to help protect your gums and maintain their health between your regularly scheduled dental cleanings. Perio Protect involves the daily application of a special gel which contains hydrogen peroxide. The gel is placed in a customized oral appliance called a Perio Tray. Similar to a mouthguard, the Perio Tray is designed to fit comfortably over your teeth, ultimately creating a temporary seal that can effectively deliver the gel formula into deep crevices between the gums and the teeth—areas that are not easy to access with normal brushing, flossing, and mouthwash. The device needs to be worn for only a few minutes at a time each day. The medicine that’s gently pushed into the gums is designed to fight infection and make it harder for harmful biofilm to grow inside periodontal pockets, which helps to prevent gum disease from progressing to more severe stages.

The Perio Protect system can work as a powerful adjunctive therapy along with your daily oral hygiene routines and professional cleanings. This treatment can also be helpful for maintaining long-term oral wellness and reducing the chance that gum surgery may be required later in life.
